Ever wondered how much of a footprint you leave on our planet while traveling? If you read our “Why sustainable travel matters” post, you should already know why you’d want to care about your travel footprint. However, if you’re like us, you’re probably still having a hard time seeing your impact on our planet. Luckily, we’ve created a tool for you to estimate how many years it would take a tree to offset your CO2 emissions. We think that’s a pretty clear message. So if you want to estimate the CO2 footprint of your next trip, start our estimator below!
WARNING: Results are shocking!

Select all forms of transport you will use
Only actual flight hours without layovers
Total kilometers by car during your trip
Total kilometers by motorcycle during your trip
Total kilometers by bike during your trip
Total kilometers by train during your trip
Total kilometers by bus during your trip
Total kilometers on foot during your trip
The total estimated footprint is:
In total, a single tree would need to absorb CO2 from our atmosphere for incredible [total]. But I don't think we have time to wait that long. Additionally, due to mediocre conditions and natural catastrophes, only 1 out of 4 trees actually survives in the long run. So to make sure you actually offset your footprint, we'd recommend donating:
They would offset your trip over the next 40 years. You can achieve this by donating [item-153_value] € to the Plant-for-the-Planet foundation below.
Subscribe to our mailing list to stay tuned about our project and receive your personal footprint calculations as a PDF via email.
One note: This calculator uses average values of typical tourists and transportation methods. Your actual footprint may vary significantly. For example, traveling in groups is usually way more sustainable than traveling alone (check out this article). Moreover, traveling slowly is usually much more efficient than rushing through places. Offset your footprint by planting trees
Right now, you’re probably shocked how big of a footprint your next journey leaves on our planet. Fortunately, we found a way you can still enjoy your vacation, while reducing the negative side effects. Support the “Plants-for-the-Planet” campaign by sponsoring trees. Founded in 2007 by then nine-year-old Felix Finkbeiner, Plant-for-the-Planet’s mission is to increase the number of trees by one trillion. So far they have been able to plant more than 15 billion trees. Every euro donated means they’re one tree closer to their target. Help us and our mission, and offset your own footprint by donating below!
Want to find out more about your impact on our planet?
By even thinking about reducing your travel footprint, you’re already one step closer to living a more sustainable life. But responsible travel is just a small part of being sustainable. If you want to estimate or offset your overall impact on our planet, make sure to check out myclimate.org‘s CO2 calculators. By supporting companies to identify and exploit potential in the areas of CO2, energy and resource efficiency and by educating people all over the world, they have now developed over 80 projects in 30 countries. This foundation inspires us and gives us hope for the future.
The future is coming anyway. What it will look like is up to us.
